Benchmarking is more of an art than a science. Of course there some practical techniques that can help the best benchmarking is done with an intuition that is been developed from years and years of delivering successful projects.

Performance tuning is something that needs to be done to all projects, always in varying degrees, but with an eye to making the application perform the best it can for the server environment the network infrastructure and the intended audience.
